A Dilemma: Die Casting or Investment Casting

A Dilemma: Die Casting or Investment Casting. Are you in a dilemma in choosing a better metal casting process for a certain project you have in mind? If you are choosing between investment casting and die casting method then you are reading the right article.

Which is better: Die Casting or Investment Casting Process? The answer actually depends on your plan and the outcome that you desire. Both of them share similar features which makes it a little more difficult to decide. Both are capable of mass production and intricate details.

The following are simple comparisons that, hopefully, will help you decide:

Reliability. When it comes to reliability, you could say that both are at par with each other. Both investment and die casting process maintains repeatability from casting to casting.

Casting Versatility. For die casting process like aluminum die casting process, the metals that could be casted are non-ferrous metals but it is more preferable if AL-based metals are used. On the other hand, investment casting could cast both non-ferrous and ferrous metals. As far as casting versatility is concerned, investing casting has the upper hand.

Intricate Design and Dimensional Tolerances. Investment casting has dimensional tolerance of .003 inch at its best while Die casting has dimensional tolerance up to .001 inch. Dimensional tolerance refers to tolerable deviation of the actual dimension of the castings produced compared to the planned or the ‘should-be’ dimension of the casting. With that being said, die casting is more dimensionally accurate than investment casting.

Casting Weight Range. Die casting has a size range from 1oz. up to 75lb while Investment casting, on the other hand, is from less than 1oz up to 25 pounds. Clearly die casting has wider range when it comes to casting weights.
