Aluminum is an element known for its light weight, ability to be molded into very thin strips, has a dimensional stability to be shaped in complex forms and resistant to corrosive materials. These processes are not as easy as they seem. Different precautions must be taken in the process of casting aluminum. Dissolved hydrogen in liquid aluminum is reduced to a low level. You can also add CI2 gas which would then eliminate solutes of alkali metal and some other inclusions. But before the use of these gases, they should be cleaned in a bag house to avoid environment destruction. If commercial aluminum is degassed and cast, there would be impurities and it would lead to stress and cracks.

Aluminum is Handy in Die Casting – Casting is a manufacturing or production process wherein a liquid material is poured in a hollow mold, the cavity of which has the manufacturer’s desired shape, and after which, allowed to solidify. Once already in its solid state, the casted material is ejected from the mold. A lot of casting done is with the use of hot liquid metal or some other materials that may cold set even after it was mixed with other components like plaster, concrete, epoxy, etc.

There are several processes in casting metals. Also, there are only few metals that may be cast by all of the mentioned metal casting processes. Aluminum is one of those metals. Several metal alloys are being used in the manufacturing of parts using the die casting process. Among the very first metal alloys used in die casting of metal were tin and lead. However, several other metal alloys followed and came into use for die casting parts. Die casting zinc alloy #3 is one of the most popular zinc metal alloys. Zinc-based alloys are popular because they are among the easiest to die cast.

Die casting zinc alloy #3 and Die casting zinc alloy #5 have high ductility and excellent impact strength. This makes it possible to cast zinc alloys with thin walls. Zinc alloys also offer excellent surface smoothness that makes plating and painting easier. Any high quality zinc metal should be used in the formulation of alloys to ensure strength and dimensional stability of the alloy.

Zinc Die casting alloys involve two processes. The hot chamber method is the first method, which uses a pool of molten metal to harden the metal in the die and the cold chamber method which uses separate chambers to melt and hold melted metal before adding the zinc alloy and injecting them into the die casting die. The low melting point of zinc alloy gives it the flexibility to be used both in the hot chamber and the cold chamber die casting machines. This makes die casting zinc alloys among the most saleable in the market today, especially in the automotive industry.

Zinc alloy is also called commercially as Zamak alloy. Zamak is an acronym for zinc, aluminum, magnesium and copper, the four alloys in the conventional zinc group. Zinc alloy die casting technology has revolutionized from manufacturing simple shapes to more complex ones.
